Accountability is a vital part of the Christian life. It reflects a commitment not only to personal integrity but also to the communal call of faith. For Christians, accountability is deeply rooted in scripture and woven into the fabric of discipleship. It urges us to reflect on WHY we do what we do—our WHY as followers of Jesus Christ.
Discovering Your Purpose
To truly understand what accountability means to you, it’s essential to uncover your purpose. Your WHY is the deep-seated reason behind your actions, the driving force that motivates you to live out your faith. What drives your decisions? What inspires you to get out of bed each morning?
For Christians, this often boils down to our desire to reflect the love of Jesus in our actions. Scripture, our unwavering guiding light, provides wisdom and direction in this journey.
Engaging in daily prayer and reflection is a proactive step in discovering your purpose. Ask yourself questions like:
– What are my unique gifts and talents?
– How can I use these gifts to serve others?
– In what ways can I contribute to spreading the gospel?
The answers to these questions can provide clarity and serve as guiding principles for future decisions.
You can also seek wisdom from scripture. Some passages, like Romans 12:1-2, encourage us to renew our minds so that we can discern God’s will for our lives. This renewal process is often facilitated through engaging in community, studying the Word, and prayer.
The WHY Behind Our Faith
The guiding purpose for Christians is to share the loving message of Jesus Christ, to welcome others into the family of God, and to participate in helping them grow in their faith. This is not just a passive calling—it requires action.
The Gospel of Matthew reminds us of this in Jesus’ own words:
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age” – Matthew 28:19-20.
This Great Commission compels us to center our lives on ministry that serves others, brings them closer to God, and demonstrates the love of Christ in action.
To live out this mission, accountability must be our foundation. It keeps us aligned with our purpose, ensuring that our actions reflect our faith.
But what happens when obstacles arise? What do we do when criticism, doubt, or resistance seeks to derail our efforts?
Overcoming Doubt and Criticism
It’s essential to remember that throughout our journey as Christ-followers, there will always be voices that aim to sow seeds of doubt. Recognizing this tactic as the work of Satan is crucial, for the evil one seeks to distract, divide, and destroy.
Such doubt seeks to distract us from our purpose and challenge our faith. Even when we earnestly follow Jesus’ teachings, there will always be challenges. Doubt-casting is an ancient tactic, often employed to create division and hinder the work of God.
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” – 1 Peter 5:8-9.
Recognizing this truth can help reposition your focus. To navigate through doubt, it’s vital to stay anchored in your identity as a child of God.
Encouragement for Staying the Course
During such times, we must remember our WHY. Why do we love? Why do we serve? The answer is simple yet heartfelt—because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:19).
When we focus on this truth, it strengthens our resolve to continue doing the work God has called us to, even in the face of resistance. It’s a reminder to stay the course, no matter the challenges.
Here are some safeguards to help you navigate challenges with a spirit grounded in faith:
Staying Firm in Scripture: This is our ultimate source of truth and guidance. Return to God’s Word for perspective and encouragement. Paul reminds us in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Lean into Community: Accountability is most effective within a supportive community. Find others who share your WHY—fellow believers who encourage, pray for, and stand beside you. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Commit to Prayer: Prayer is not a last resort but a first line of defense. Bring your burdens and challenges before God, trusting Him to provide wisdom and clarity. Jesus modeled this in His ministry, often retreating to quiet places to pray and seek the Father’s guidance.
Speak Words of Grace: Seek to speak with grace-filled communication and the love of Christ in all interactions. Colossians 4:6 encourages us to, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Keep the WHY at the Forefront
Ultimately, accountability keeps us focused on the WHY behind all we do. Our purpose is not to please everyone or avoid all criticism—it is to glorify God through our ministry, sharing His love with the world. When we are secure in this purpose, we can face challenges with courage and hope.
Jesus Himself faced doubt and resistance during His earthly ministry. Yet, He remained steadfast, knowing His WHY was to fulfill the will of the Father and bring salvation to the world. As His followers, we are called to do the same, trusting that God is faithful to sustain us.
So, what is your WHY? Reflect on it, anchor yourself in it, and let it guide every step of your walk with Christ. When the road seems complicated and doubt arises, stand firm.
Always remember, God’s mission is worth it, and His love is unshakable.
