Membership Lesson 1: The Journey of Faith and Belonging

Welcome to the Hinesville First United Methodist Church online membership class! Whether you’re new to our church family or a long-time member looking for a refresher, we’re so glad you’re here. Over the following six lessons, we’ll explore what it means to be part of this community of faith—and how we can grow together in Christ. Let’s take this journey one step at a time, as we learn, reflect, and deepen our connection to God and each other.

Today, we’re talking about what it means to belong — not just to a church, but to a spiritual family. Belonging is more than attending a service or having your name on a list. It’s about being part of something larger. It’s a community of people who are learning, serving, worshiping, and growing together in Christ’s love.

At Hinesville First United Methodist, we believe every person is created in God’s image and loved beyond measure. When we join this church, we’re saying, “I want to become a partner in a shared mission — to love God and love all people.” Belonging gives us a foundation. When life gets busy or complex, we’re not walking alone. Because the truth is, we need prayers, encouragement, and grace to surround us. The church becomes a family that helps us stand firm, rejoice together, and care for our community.

Now, in the United Methodist Church, membership is about commitment. When someone joins the church, they make five beautiful promises — to uphold the Church by their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Let’s look at these for a moment.

First, we promise to support the church with our prayers. We commit to lifting our community and our world in prayer.

Second, we promise our presence. This means showing up — for worship, for fellowship, and for one another. Being present is how we build relationships and experience God together.

Next, we promise our gifts. This is about sharing what God has given us to bless others. And while it does include our financial support that allows our church to carry out its ministry, it’s also about recognizing that God has given each of us unique talents and resources to share.

Fourth, is our service. We promise to use our hands and hearts to serve others, both inside the church walls and out in the community, showing God’s love through action.

And finally, we promise our witness. This means by living a life that reflects God’s love and grace, for others to see.

Now, these promises are not burdens — they’re life-giving rhythms that help us become who God created us to be. They are the pathways through which our faith comes alive. It’s one thing to believe in God, but it’s another to live out that belief in community.

When we worship together, our individual praise becomes a chorus. When we serve together, our small acts of kindness create a powerful wave of change. Sharing our questions, our joys, and our struggles with others helps us see God in new ways and reminds us that we are not alone. Our faith is stretched, strengthened, and deepened when it’s shared.

One of my favorite things about the United Methodist tradition is how we see faith as a journey. And listen, you don’t have to have everything figured out to take your next step. You just have to be willing to grow. To let God lead, and to let others walk with you. And that’s the heart of church membership. Saying YES to community, to discipleship, and to God’s ongoing work in your life.

Here at the Hinesville First United Methodist Church, we celebrate a rich history. From our founding in 1837 — to our ministry today. But what excites us most is what God is doing RIGHT NOW! We see God’s Spirit at work in our worship — in children laughing and learning in their programs — to youth gaining a better understanding about God’s Word and how to apply those lessons — all the way to how our church family serves our neighbors and cares for one another.

I want to leave you with this thought today. And that is — you are already a part of this story. Exploring membership is simply about recognizing that a place at the table has already been set for you. God’s grace is already at work in your life, leading you to this very moment.

May this be a season to renew your faith, to rediscover your purpose, and to connect more deeply with others. But wherever you are, know this.

You belong. You are loved. And you are welcome here.

Lord, thank You for calling us into community. Thank You for the gift of belonging and the grace that meets us every step of the way. As we begin this journey of learning and faith, open our hearts to Your Spirit. Help us grow in love for You — and for one another. For this we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thank you for listening! In our next lesson, we’ll explore our United Methodist core beliefs. And I really look forward to continuing this journey with you!
