Membership Lesson 4: The Story and Mission of the Hinesville First United Methodist Church

Welcome back! In our first three lessons, we explored what it means to belong, what United Methodists believe, and how the Methodist movement began—right here in Georgia. Today, we’re bringing that story closer to home. We’re talking about our church—Hinesville First United Methodist—its history, its heart, and its mission.

A Legacy of Faith in Liberty County

Our story begins in 1837, when a small group of faithful believers gathered in the newly established town of Hinesville to worship, pray, and serve their neighbors. Picture it: no paved streets, no electricity—just lanterns lighting the night and hymns filling the air. Those early Methodists believed their little community needed more than homes and stores—it needed a place for the soul. And so, they built one. Through wars, hurricanes, economic challenges, and seasons of growth, the Hinesville First United Methodist Church has stood as a steady presence—a place of grace and hope for nearly two centuries.

Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors

At Hinesville First United Methodist, our welcoming declaration—Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors—is more than just a phrase. It’s our guide, a reflection of how seriously we take our mission to the community. So, let’s take a moment to get a closer look at what it means to have Open Hearts that reflect Christ’s love, Open Minds that seek understanding and growth, and Open Doors that welcome everyone into God’s family.

Open Hearts: We aspire to see the divine spark in every person and to treat everyone with compassion, kindness, and respect. As a Christian community, we express the loving example of Jesus Christ through nurturing and supporting one another. Every time we welcome a guest, serve a meal, or pray with someone in need, we’re living out this call to have open hearts.

Open Minds: Pursuing knowledge and understanding is essential to our faith journey. Historically, United Methodists have sought to explore, question, learn, and grow with open minds. We value diverse perspectives and welcome the opportunity to engage in thoughtful dialogue, knowing we can learn much from one another. This openness helps us grow in faith and deepen our connection to God and each other.

Open Doors: We open our doors wide, welcoming everyone. We actively work to dismantle barriers that exclude or marginalize anyone. With open doors, we create an atmosphere where all are welcome—where everyone can find the loving example of Jesus Christ, comfort, a sense of belonging, and a sense of purpose.

A Church That Loves God and Loves All People

Today, our mission is simple and strong: “Glorifying God Through Love and Faithful Service.” These aren’t just words on a banner or a website—they’re the heartbeat of everything we do. We love God through worship, prayer, and spiritual growth. We love people through service, fellowship, and caring for our neighbors. This mission reminds us that faith isn’t just something we believe—it’s something we live. Every time we welcome a guest, serve our community, teach a child, or pray with someone in need, we’re putting that mission into action.

A Community of Connection and Care

Our church is made up of people from all walks of life—military families, teachers, business owners, retirees, students, and children. Some have lived here all their lives; others are just passing through for a season. But everyone who walks through our doors is welcomed with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. We worship together. We share life’s joys and sorrows together. And we serve side by side—whether through food drives, outreach activities, or simple acts of kindness in our community. When someone needs encouragement, a meal, a prayer, or a helping hand, we want them to know they have a church family who cares.

Our Worship and Ministries

At Hinesville First United Methodist, our worship blends the beauty of tradition with the warmth of community. Our spaces have echoed with hymns and laughter for generations. We celebrate worship, baptisms, weddings, and confirmations—all sacred moments that mark the journey of faith. But our ministries reach far beyond Sunday mornings:

  • Children and youth discover faith through learning and laughter.
  • Adults grow together in small groups and studies.
  • Community missions help meet practical needs in Liberty County and beyond.

Each ministry reflects one truth: when we serve together, we are the hands and feet of Christ.

A Story Still Being Written

The best part of our history is that it’s still being written—and you are invited to be part of it. Every person who joins this family adds a new chapter to our story. Your chapter may be one of teaching, serving, or simply offering encouragement to someone who needs it. Whatever your role, you matter here. As we look toward the future, we hold onto the same faith that sustained those first members in 1837: that God’s grace is sufficient, His Spirit is alive, and His Church still has work to do!

Lord, thank You for the story You’ve been writing through Hinesville First United Methodist Church for so many years. Thank You for every person who has prayed, served, and worshiped here. As we continue this journey, fill us with the same faith, love, and courage that guided those who came before us. Help us to love You deeply and to love all people freely. For this we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Next time, in lesson 5, we’re going to discover the beauty of baptism. Together, we’ll explore how this sacred act makes God’s grace visible and its deep meaning in our faith journey.
