Membership Lesson 6: Living Out Your Commitment — Your Next Step in Faith

Membership Lesson 6: Living Out Your Commitment — Your Next Step in Faith

Welcome to the final session of our Membership Class. Over the past few lessons, we’ve explored what it means to belong — to experience grace, to learn from John Wesley’s story and our Methodist roots, to celebrate the legacy of Hinesville First United Methodist Church, and to embrace the sacred meaning of baptism. Now, we’ve arrived at the heart of it all: what it means to live out your commitment every single day.

A Living Faith

Faith isn’t something we tuck away for Sundays or keep on a shelf. Faith is alive — it’s something we live. When you take the step of church membership, you’re saying: “I want to follow Jesus with this community. I want to grow in faith and help others do the same.”

That’s why, when we welcome new members into the church, we ask them to make five promises: To uphold the church by their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Each of these promises is a rhythm of discipleship — a way to keep your faith active, vibrant, and growing. Let’s take a closer look at what each one means.

Your Prayers: We start with prayer because everything flows from our relationship with God. When you pray for your church, you’re strengthening the spiritual heartbeat of our congregation. You can pray for your pastor, for our ministries, for those who are hurting, and for the Holy Spirit to guide our mission. As you pray, something beautiful happens: your heart becomes more aligned with God’s heart.

Your Presence: Next is your presence — showing up, both physically and spiritually. We grow stronger together when we gather for worship, small groups, and service projects. Your presence matters. It encourages others and reminds them they’re not alone. When we come together, something sacred happens: Christ is in our midst.

Your Gifts: And then, your gifts — your time, talents, and financial support — this is what makes our ministry possible. Every act of generosity, no matter how small, becomes part of God’s larger work. Through your giving, children learn about Jesus, families find support, missions are funded, and lives are transformed. We give not out of obligation, but out of gratitude for all God has given us.

Your Service: Now, when we talk about service, this means we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ. Serving others is one of the clearest ways to live out your faith. Whether you’re greeting people at the door, getting involved in community outreach, helping out with our children’s program, or bringing food to our local food bank, service connects us to the heart of Jesus. And here’s the best part: when we serve, we experience joy! Love always multiplies when it’s shared!

Your Witness: And finally, we promise to uphold the church through our witness — sharing your faith with words and actions. You don’t have to preach a sermon. Sometimes, your kindness, integrity, or compassion is the sermon. The way you live speaks volumes about the grace you’ve received. Your witness helps others see God’s love in a real and personal way.

Taking the Next Step

Now, if you’ve been walking through this class and feel ready to take the next step — whether that’s baptism, profession of faith, or membership — we would love to celebrate that with you. You can reach out to me (Pastor Tony), fill out a connection card, or talk with me after worship. I’ll walk with you, answer your questions, and plan a time for you to be welcomed during a Sunday service. And remember, faith is a journey, and every step — including this one — is covered in grace.

Your Ongoing Journey

Becoming a member isn’t the end of the road; instead, it’s the beginning of a new chapter. At the Hinesville First United Methodist Church, you’ll have opportunities to grow, serve, and share life with others who are passionate about living out their faith. You’ll find joy in the friendships you form, strength in the prayers that surround you, and purpose in the ways you help others encounter God’s love.

A Final Word of Encouragement

Wherever you are on your journey, know this: You are loved. You are welcome. And you belong here.

The grace that called John Wesley across the ocean, that sustained generations of believers in Liberty County, and that continues to shape our church today — that same grace is calling you, as well. God has begun a good work in you, and He will be faithful to complete it.

Loving God, thank You for the gift of community and the beauty of belonging. Thank You for everyone who has taken this journey of faith and for all You are doing in their lives. As we live out our vows — our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness — fill us with Your Spirit, that we may be a blessing to others. For this we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thank you for being a part of this Membership Class and for taking the time to explore what it means to belong, grow, and serve in faith. Your presence and commitment are a blessing to our church family, and we are so grateful for the journey we’ve shared together. If there’s anything I can do to help you take your next step, please don’t hesitate to reach out. May God bless you abundantly!
